I am Jagathesh Kumar. My Chinese name is曾羿凱. I have been teaching English at Providence University since 2005. I have been teaching the course "Movie English and Culture" for the past 7 years. I am from India. I have an MPhil (pre-PhD) degree from the Center for Linguistics and English, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India. My Bachelor degree was in English Literature and my Masters in Comparative English Literature. The majority of my teaching career has been geared towards EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and ESP (English for Specific Purposes). Currently, apart from teaching Movie English and Culture course, I also teach Freshmen English, Travel English and Culture, News English and Culture, Elite English courses, Integrated English and so on. I have taught TOEFL-iBT and IELTs classes. I teach courses related to Business such as Business communications and Cross-cultural communication as well.
Three of the most important traits I believe a teacher should have are that of motivation to teach, compassion and patience. A teacher will develop relationships with multitudes of students throughout their career, each with different personalities and each requiring understanding and a kind heart. I believe I have the ability to understand, communicate, and guide the students in learning not just the language but also in gaining knowledge and valuable experience in their life. I am interested in preparing lesson plans, developing authentic teaching materials, communicative classroom activities and also focused on teaching through stories, visuals, language learning games and online materials. I make use of the modern technology and smart phones in teaching the language. I use interactive websites such as kahoot.com, scoractive.com and slido.com extensively in my class. I found that students are motivated and attentive when I have interactive lessons through websites.
